7 Bright And Fun Facts About The Magic Of Christmas Lights

  • December 11, 2025

Every December, streets, homes, and cities across the globe glimmer with millions of tiny bulbs that announce the official start of the Christmas season. But beyond their glow lies a kaleidoscope of stories, from daring inventors and record-breaking light shows to the heartfelt Filipino tradition of hanging parols by the window.

Here are some twinkling trivia that will make you see those holiday lights in a whole new glow.

1. The First Christmas Tree to Shine Electric

Before electricity, families risked setting their trees on fire by pinning candles to the branches. That changed in 1882, when Edward H. Johnson, a close associate of Thomas Edison, hand-wired 80 red, white, and blue bulbs onto his tree in New York. Neighbors gathered outside to marvel at the very first electric Christmas tree.

Still, it took decades before average households could afford them. In the early 1900s, only wealthy families and department stores had lighted trees, while everyone else stuck to candles or lanterns.

2. A Status Symbol That Lit Up the Holidays

By the 1920s, electric Christmas lights became a must-have for anyone who wanted to show off a little sparkle. Ads back then called them “safer than candles, more beautiful than ever.” More than just a decoration, it was considered a sign of modern living.

Today, that same pride lives on in Filipino homes, where families compete for the best-decorated, and often most twinkling house on their street.

3. When Technology Made Christmas Brighter

Fast-forward to today, and lighting tech has come a long way. From fragile glass bulbs to energy-saving LEDs, the modern Christmas glow is brighter, safer, and far more sustainable.

LED lights are the most commonly used Christmas lights today, consuming about 80% less energy than old incandescent ones. They’re perfect for those massive outdoor displays at malls or city plazas. Some modern setups even sync to music, blinking to the beat of Christmas jingles.

4. The Origins Of The Parol

Here in our country, the Christmas light isn’t just a bulb; it’s a symbol of faith, creativity, and hope. The parol, a star-shaped lantern inspired by the Star of Bethlehem, dates back to Spanish colonial times. Inspired by the Mexican piñata, parols were originally used as lamps to guide churchgoers on their way to midnight mass or Simbang Gabi.

Families across the country craft parols from bamboo and papel de hapon, while modern versions use LED strips and even recycled bottles. Whether handmade or store-bought, they carry the same message: light triumphs over darkness.

5. The World’s First Light Show Was in a Store Window

One of the earliest “light shows” happened on New York’s Fifth Avenue in the 1930s, when department stores began using blinking bulbs to lure in holiday shoppers. From there, animated light displays became a global trend that eventually evolved into the dazzling mall facades we see every December.

Filipinos carry this tradition to this day, with our malls trying to out-sparkle each other, resulting in one of the brightest Christmases in the world.

6. Lights That Travel the World

From Japan’s glowing tunnels to Europe’s Christmas markets, cities around the world pour heart and art into their light displays. The Guinness World Record for the most Christmas lights on a residential property goes to the Richards family in New York, which boasted of over 600,000 bulbs!

7. The Future of Christmas Lights Is Green

As technology advances, the glow of the holidays is getting greener. Eco-friendly LEDs, solar parols, and even biodegradable materials are becoming more common in Filipino households. Some communities now hold “eco-friendly” parol-making contests, rewarding creativity and sustainability and proving that joy and care for the planet can shine together.

A Season Lit by Love

Christmas lights have always been more than twinkle and color. They tell stories of invention, of community, and of home. Whether they’re Edison’s early bulbs or a child’s handmade parol, they remind us that in the merriest of seasons, we have the power to shine.
