Renewables make up lion’s share of new energy projects in 2025

  • January 30, 2025

This 2025 is looking clean and green for the Philippines. According to data from the Department of Energy (DOE), nearly 7,000 megawatts (MW) of committed energy projects have been slated for 2025, and clean power has the lion’s share with almost 5,000 MW.

Of 6,841 MW of committed private sector-initiated projects for this year, 5,754 MW will be built in Luzon, 855 MW in Visayas, and 232 MW in Mindanao.

Let’s break down the numbers by region and type of renewable energy.

Luzon

Luzon leads the pack with 5,754 MW of committed power projects.

Of these, 3,923 MW will be generated by planned renewable energy (RE) facilities. Solar energy (3,060 MW) has the top spot in Luzon’s RE facilities, with wind coming in second at 759 MW. This is followed by geothermal power (68 MW), hydropower (35 MW), and biomass (1 MW).

Visayas

In the Visayas, there are 855 MW worth of committed energy projects.

Of these, 846 MW are classified as renewable energy. Like in Luzon, solar energy will be generating the greatest amount of clean power with 742 MW, followed by geothermal (36 MW), biomass (30 MW), hydropower (24 MW), and wind (14 MW).

Mindanao

In Mindanao, 232 MW worth of committed energy projects are targeted for commercial operations in 2025, with 176 MW produced by renewable energy: solar at 128 MW and hydropower at 48 MW.

The race to meet energy demands

Peak electricity demand is expected to increase across all three regions in 2025. Luzon’s peak demand is projected to grow 5.4 percent from 14,016 MW to 14,769 MW. Peak demand in Visayas will increase 16 percent from 2,681 MW to 3,111 MW, while Mindanao will see an 8.2 percent increase from 2,577 MW to 2,789 MW.

Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla emphasized that the nearly 7,000 MW worth of energy projects targeted for commercial operations should address rising electricity demand.

“We are in a much better situation this year than last year because several projects have come online,” he said. “This includes not only new generation capacity but also transmission lines that are vital to bringing the supply to the market.”
