Renewables Firm Alternergy to Develop Albay Wind Power Project

  • March 31, 2025

The Department of Energy has awarded Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp. (AWHC), the wind energy division of Alternergy, a Certificate of Authority (COA) to explore and assess wind resources across seven municipalities in over 6,318 hectares in Albay.

If the project proves viable, it could generate at least 150 megawatts (MW) of capacity, becoming an important part of Alternergy’s plan to reach its capacity target of 500 MW by 2026.

“Alternergy is pleased to receive the DOE’s approval to develop another wind project in Luzon,” said AWHC President Knud Hedeager.

He added that the COA framework is a significant policy that helps developers by reducing risks and improving project viability.

An expanding wind power portfolio

“This is an exciting time for us as we are set to complete construction of our Tanay and Alabat wind power projects this year, after which Alternergy will be moving forward with developing new wind projects,” said Hedeager.

The Tanay wind power project in Rizal has a capacity of 128 MW, and the Alabat wind power project in Quezon has a capacity of 64 MW.

In 2005, Alternergy’s founders co-developed the Bangui Bay wind farm, the first on-grid wind farm in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. The renewable energy developer also established the 54-MW Pililla wind farm in Rizal.

The Albay wind project will be Alternergy’s fifth wind project in the country.

Under the COA, the AWHC has three years to finish pre-feasibility studies and obtain necessary government agency permits. If the project site is deemed commercially viable, the COA will be turned into a 25-year wind energy service contract.
