The Philippines is one of the most fire-prone countries in the world, due to its geophysical location and various hazards such as typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and floods. Adding to the risks are a lack of fire safety education and electricity jumpers.

What’s more, only a measly 1.75% of Filipinos are insured, meaning that most of us do not have a security blanket to catch us should disaster befall.

Although we cannot predict how nature will act, there is one thing under our control at home- electricity. Protect your home and family by following these fire safety tips for for your energy supply:

1. Keep water and flammable substances far from electric outlets.

This includes nail polish remover, rubbing alcohol, hairspray, hand sanitizer, and cigarette lighters.

2. Follow instructions.

Make sure to read and understand the instruction manual of your appliances before using them. This helps you be informed on how to optimize their energy usage, and ensures you don’t waste the money spent on these products by accidentally burning them.

3. Do regular check-ups on your outlets and cables.

Check for any fraying and exposed wires, and keep an eye out for exploding sockets. Repair and replace them before they can cause any damage.

4. Let the pros handle it.

As tempting as it may be to try becoming your own handyman, technicians are a sure bet for a safe and effective procedure.

5. Invest in fire safety.

We know costs are rising, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Having a fire extinguisher, smoke detectors and a sprinkler system are a sound investment that return the invaluable cost of your peace of mind.
