DOST Launches First Quantum Lab Dedicated to Energy Sector

DOST Launches First Quantum Lab Dedicated to Energy Sector

  • April 4, 2025

The Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) has launched the country’s first quantum research lab dedicated to the energy sector, called the Quantum and Intelligent Systems Laboratory for Power Engineering (QISLaP).

The lab is funded by a P18-million grant from the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

“Gradually, we are transforming the industry via quantum computing. By investing in this project, we are not only tackling the present energy challenges but also establishing a foundation for a more resilient and sustainable energy future for the Philippines,” said DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr.

Quantum computing to boost the energy sector

QISLaP will research hybrid quantum computing models to enhance forecasting and optimization in power systems, particularly in managing and optimizing energy production, distribution, and consumption.

According to TIP professor and project leader Gerard Francesco Apolinario, the laboratory’s initial focus will be predicting energy-related metrics like electricity demand, solar irradiance, wind speed, and electricity prices using algorithms that combine classical and quantum methods.

“The Philippines has yet to benefit from quantum computing fully, but hybrid quantum computing, which combines the strengths of classical and quantum computing, presents a promising solution for addressing key challenges, especially in the energy sector,” Apolinario said.

Finding solutions for gaps and issues

The laboratory will also function as a testbed for simulating renewable energy scenarios, including ongoing work with Batangas 1 Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BATELEC I) to explore the optimization of distributed energy systems. This project aims to guide day-to-day operations and long-term infrastructure planning in the energy sector.

“We’re excited to witness the establishment of QISLaP, as this will serve as a research ground for esteemed experts who will be working together to create innovative solutions to make our energy systems smarter, more efficient, and more resilient,” said Enrico Paringit, Director of PCIEERD.
