First Gen Corporation, led by the Lopez Group, has partnered with Sanyo Denki Philippines to provide clean, renewable energy (RE) to the Japanese firm’s manufacturing operations in Zambales.

Under the agreement, First Gen will supply 5,500 kilowatts (kW) of electricity to power the production plants and technology center of Sanyo Denki Philippines at Subic Technopark in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. The electricity will come from a geothermal power plant in Negros Oriental, operated by Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a subsidiary of First Gen.

Sanyo Denki Philippines, a unit of Japan’s Sanyo Denki Co. Ltd., manufactures various electronic and electrical products such as power supply systems, photovoltaic inverters, AC servo motors, amplifiers, stepping motors, and DC cooling fans. The company has been operating in the Philippines since 2000

RE solutions for sustainability and efficiency

The partnership supports Sanyo Denki’s long-term sustainability plan to transition its global manufacturing sites to renewable energy sources.

“We are pleased to start our partnership with First Gen, which we believe is the best way to achieve our goal of using more renewable energy in our production, especially in light of our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations,” Sanyo Denki Philippines President Hirokazu Takeuchi said.

“We also believe it is our obligation to provide our customers with products that are produced using renewable energy,” Takeuchi added.

In addition to supplying clean power, First Gen and its affiliate Pi Energy Inc. will equip Sanyo Denki Philippines with a remote energy monitoring system, enabling real-time tracking of the company’s energy usage for improved operational efficiency.

“Shifting a 24/7 operation to RE and rationalizing power consumption are challenges for manufacturing firms. It is our privilege to help enable and advise them on to take the next steps towards a more sustainable future for their operations,” First Gen Chief Engagement Officer Carlo Vega said.

“We look forward to continuing the journey with Sanyo Denki Philippines and continue to integrate more RE and energy efficiency solutions into their facilities,” Vega added.

First Gen currently has around 1,651 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity from 28 renewable energy facilities, which include solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power plants.

In addition, the company runs 2,017 MW of natural gas-fired power plants, bringing its total contribution to the country’s power supply to 3,668 MW.
