Local Plastics Manufacturer Bags Solar Project Deal

  • July 25, 2025

Taison Industrial Corporation, a local plastic manufacturer, is gearing up to produce thousands of floaters for SunAsia Energy’s ambitious project to build the world’s largest floating solar farm in Laguna Lake.

The floating solar installation, with a planned capacity of 1,318 megawatts, will be developed by SunAsia Energy in partnership with Blueleaf Energy Philippines.

SunAsia has signed a supply agreement with China-based global solar company Sungrow for the deployment of floating solar photovoltaic systems, with local firm Taison Industrial handling the manufacturing of the floaters.

Taison Industrial will produce high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floaters, specialized mounting structures that support solar panels on water. These floaters are engineered to endure strong winds, heavy rains, and typhoons common in the Philippines.

“This initiative is a testament to our commitment to clean energy goals. It’s not just about harnessing solar power; it’s about creating sustainable job opportunities, boosting the small-medium enterprise through tourism, and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said SunAsia Energy President Maria Theresa Capellan.

Local manufacturing agreement boosts floating solar sector

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), these supply contracts mark a significant boost for the country’s floating solar industry. The DOE emphasized that local manufacturing of key components such as floaters will accelerate growth in this renewable energy segment through job creation, capacity building, and technology transfer.

“It reflects not only a deepening confidence in our energy transition pathway, but also the strength of public-private partnerships in bringing transformative ideas to life,” Energy Secretary Sharon Garin shared.

Garin hailed the agreement as “a milestone in the country’s decarbonization strategy,” highlighting their benefits in driving industrial innovation and job creation. She stated, “It signifies our readiness to lead a future with a clear footprint in industrial innovation and progress.”

The SunAsia-Blueleaf joint venture currently holds ten 25-year solar energy operating contracts (SEOC) from the DOE, positioning the Laguna Lake floating solar farm as a flagship initiative in the Philippines’ renewable energy landscape.
