Meralco to deploy 3.27 million smart meters
- March 14, 2025
The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced plans to roll out 3.27 million smart meters between 2025 and 2029 as part of its Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) program.
AMI is an integrated system that combines smart meters, communication networks, and data management tools, allowing for two-way communication between utility companies and consumers. Smart meters help customers track and control their energy consumption in real time while helping utility customers identify power outages.
“It aims to provide a more efficient and automated infrastructure in compliance with the regulatory requirements discussed in the Customer Choice Programs, such as the Competitive Retail Electricity Market, Green Energy Option Program, and Retail Aggregation Program,” Ronnie L. Aperocho, executive vice-president and chief operating officer (COO) of Meralco, said in an interview.

The smart meter rollout is part of the power distribution company’s proposed P215-billion capital expenditure plan for the fifth regulatory period, which spans from 2026 to 2029.
Aperocho explained that the program also supports initiatives like net metering and time-of-use, providing extra benefits to customers by enhancing their awareness of energy consumption and improving response times during outages.

A partnership for energy innovation
In November 2024, Meralco signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and its Knowledge Data Network to advance smart metering technologies in the Philippines.
The two electric utility companies reinforced their partnership with another MOU to bolster the adoption of innovative energy technologies such as nuclear energy, renewable energy, smart grids, microgrids, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, advanced metering infrastructure, smart substations, and distribution automation.
The MOU seeks to strengthen technical collaboration and exchange programs between the power companies. It also focuses on skill development through training and employee exchanges. Additionally, they will explore partnerships in consulting, advisory services, and other energy projects of shared interest.

Meralco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Manuel Pangilinan said the MOU marks a significant step for the two electric utility companies.
“Enshrined here is a commitment to exchange knowledge, strengthen capabilities, and work together toward a smarter, more resilient energy future,” Pangilinan said.
“We’re looking forward to work[ing] together with KEPCO. This collaboration allows us to refine our strategies, integrate new technologies, and find better ways to power the future. Beyond the business objectives, we want to forge and strengthen relationships that will drive meaningful progress,” he added.
