MTerra Solar, a subsidiary of MGEN Renewable Energy, Inc. (MGreen), is partnering with local governments in Nueva Ecija to launch livelihood programs for communities surrounding its MTerra Solar project, which is poised to be the world’s largest integrated renewables and energy storage facility.

MTerra Solar will combine a 3,500-megawatt solar farm with a 4,500-megawatt battery energy storage system—enough to power over two million homes. At present, the project is 33 percent complete, with Phase 1 slated for completion in February of next year. It has generated more than 1,700 jobs, and the company expects the project to create up to 10,000 employment opportunities for residents.

“As we build this transformative clean energy project, we are equally committed to building better lives for the people in our host communities,” said Dennis B. Jordan, President and  CEO of MGreen and MTerra Solar.

“Even while we are still in the construction stage, the positive impact of MTerra Solar is already being felt—and this is just the beginning,” Jordan added.

A model for socially responsible energy development

“The MTerra Solar project […] will not only contribute significantly to the Philippines’ renewable energy capacity but also serve as a model for socially responsible energy development,” the company said in a statement.

At its quarterly stakeholder engagement forum, MTerra Solar formalized three agreements with local government partners that show the company’s strong commitment to supporting nearby communities. The programs aim to provide early benefits like job opportunities, skills training, and support for small local businesses.

  • Illuminating communities: As part of its BrighTER program, MTerra Solar will set up solar-powered streetlights in seven barangays across Gapan, Peñaranda, and General Tinio in Nueva Ecija. The lights will cover about two kilometers of roads, helping improve safety and visibility at night. This effort supports the company’s goal of using clean energy to uplift and support local communities.
  • Providing job skills: Through its TERRAnsform program, MTerra Solar will work with the Meralco Power Academy and the local governments of Gapan, Peñaranda, and General Tinio to train around 630 scholars. The training will focus on the skills needed for the ongoing construction of the MTerra Solar project. Qualified participants will be hired by the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, providing them with immediate employment and valuable technical skills.
  • Supporting local enterprises: To help local businesses grow, MTerra Solar started the CarTER program, which involves building three temporary community markets at the Phase 1 project site. Local vendors can sell their products and services in these spaces, encouraging business and supporting entrepreneurship. The markets are expected to serve up to 7,500 workers, boosting local trade and small businesses.
