- July 25, 2024
The Quezon City local government actively implements the QC Solarization program with the goal of decreasing dependence on non-renewable energy sources in its facilities such as buildings, hospitals and schools in the global aim of energy conservation and climate change mitigation starting with its residents.
QC Mayor Joy Belmonte empasized, “In QC, our main emphasis is on reducing energy demand through effective building solutions and transitioning to renewable energy sources for all city-owned infrastructures.”
Around 600 photovoltaic solar panels are currently installed in key city hall buildings. There are 180 panels in the main 15-floor building houses, 108 in the legislative buildings, and 290 in the treasury buidiing. These installations are expected to reduce electric expenses by up to P1.5 million and lessens the city’s carbon footprint by 125 tons.
This year, Quezon city aims to install over 1,000 additional solar panels in city hospitals and schools, of which include Rosario Maclang Bautista General Hospital, Novaliches District Hospital, and Quezon City General Hospital. This year, the city targets to solarize Culiat Elementary School, Judge Feliciano Belmonte Senior High School, Culiat High School, New Era High School, and Tandang Sora Elementary School.
Perral guaranteed, “All infrastructure projects led by Mayor Belmonte’s administration adhere strictly to the highest engineering standards and are characterized by top-quality execution.”
To promote the fast adoption of solar energy in resident households, the QC government partnered with Meralco to establish a centralized service center at the city hall in order to streamline the process for transitioning to solar energy and provide net-metering applications.
Finally, the local government mandates the private sector to abide by QC”s Green Building ordinance to build sustaibable developments using green energy.
