Top RP steelmaker switches Bulacan plant to solar
- March 11, 2025
SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. (SteelAsia), the country’s largest steelmaker, said it installed its first solar rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system at its steel plant in Meycauayan, Bulacan.
The 1.9-megawatt-peak solar rooftop PV system, a partnership with TotalEnergies ENEOS, aligns with SteelAsia’s push for decarbonizing its steel production process.
“With over 3,200 solar modules installed, the system will generate approximately 2,700 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually,” SteelAsia said in a statement. “The initiative is part of a broader decarbonization strategy by SteelAsia, which has been integrating renewable energy sources across its operations.”

Established in 1965, SteelAsia has an annual production of over three million metric tons annually and six operating facilities across the archipelago. Two of its other steel plants—the Calaca green steel manufacturing plant and the Compostela, Cebu rolling mill—are already powered by geothermal energy.
Last January, it shipped the country’s largest steel export to date: 32,000 metric tons of high-strength reinforcing steel bound for a subway project in Vancouver, Canada. The shipment had a value of more than US$19 million or P1.1 billion.

TotalEnergies ENEOS is a joint venture between TotalEnergies, a global integrated energy company that produces and markets energies, and ENEOS, a Japanese renewable energy corporation. In 2022, the two companies signed a joint venture agreement to develop onsite B2B solar distributed generation across Asia. Together, they plan to develop 2 GW of decentralized solar capacity over the next five years.
As part of its ten-year long-term solar agreement with SteelAsia, TotalEnergies ENEOS fully funded, installed, and will operate the solar system throughout the tenure. During this ten-year period, SteelAsia will purchase the electricity produced without any additional upfront costs.
“This initiative not only delivers significant cost savings for SteelAsia but also reduces the company’s carbon footprint by approximately 2,300 tons of CO2 emissions each year, equivalent to planting over 34,500 trees,” TotalEnergies ENEOS said in a statement.
