UP Los Baños Launches Pioneering E-Bike Sharing Program

  • May 16, 2024

UPLB alumni lead the charge as the university revamps campus mobility with the Philippines’ first e-bike sharing initiative.

The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) is making strides towards a greener future with the launch of the Philippines’ first university-based e-bike sharing program.

This initiative, in partnership with Tipaklong Sustainable Mobility Corporation—founded by UPLB graduates—aims to bring back campus cycling culture and offer eco-friendly transportation options.

Sustainability at the Core

Part of UPLB’s Green Mobility Initiative (GMI), the program offers e-bikes and e-scooters via a mobile app, along with traditional bicycles. This effort underscores UPLB’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. A built-in feasibility study will track the program’s impact on emissions, trips, and travel distances, helping refine the program over time.

“This is a revolutionary step,” said Roberto P. Cereno, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs. “As a national university, we need to be conscious of our carbon footprint and engage our constituents with our efforts to be environmental stewards. One way is by focusing on our transport system.”

To promote cycling, Tipaklong held free bike clinics on April 25 and May 2 at the Old Pelota Court beside Baker Hall. On May 2, they also announced a new station in front of the Department of Social Forestry. Bike helmets are available for purchase at their office at the Old Pelota Court.

Safety and Infrastructure

To enhance safety and convenience, the UPLB Security and Safety Office will use bicycles for patrolling. The campus will also get more bike racks and dedicated bike lanes as part of the Transportation System and Traffic Management Master Plan (TSTMMP), promoting both environmental responsibility and cyclist safety.

A Collaborative Effort

The success of the GMI relies on strong partnerships. UPLB thanks UPLB Upsilon Sigma Phi, APO Theta Alumni Association, UP Beta Sigma Fraternity, UP Epsilon Chi Fraternity Los Baños Chapter, UPLB Forestry Society, and the Grand Order of the Eagles for their support. The European Union’s involvement during the ASEAN-EU Bike45Ride event in 2022 also played a significant role.

UPLB invites further collaboration from sponsors who share their vision for a sustainable campus. By working together, UPLB can serve as a model for universities nationwide.
