Prime Infra Powers Pumping Station with Clean Energy
- April 28, 2025
WawaJVCo, a subsidiary of Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc. (Prime Infra), has tapped PrimeRES Energy Corp. to provide retail electricity to the Upper Wawa Pumping Station. This marks a significant step forward in the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project.
According to the Razon-led company, having a dependable power source is crucial for the facility’s operation. Located in Antipolo City, the Upper Wawa Pumping Station features a 65-meter-deep shaft, a one-kilometer tunnel, and a system of pipelines that can transport up to 518 million liters of untreated water daily to the Manila Water treatment plant. Notably, the facility runs entirely on renewable energy.

“The energization of the Upper Wawa Pumping Station is an important step for the bulk water project towards securing reliable water supply in the long term,” said Melvin John Tan, Prime Infra Market Sector Lead for Water and WawaJVCo President.
“Our switch to retail electricity supply also enables us to adopt cost-efficient power solutions and fulfill our commitment to sustainable solutions, as the pumping station will be fully powered by clean and renewable energy sources,” Tan added.
The deal was made under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) system, part of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001. This framework enables large-scale electricity users to buy power directly from retail suppliers, usually at more competitive prices.

The biggest water source built since 1967, the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project is expected to help more than 3.5 million Filipinos by delivering up to 710 million liters of water daily once the project is completed. In June, WawaJVCo will start performance tests on the powered-up pumping station, simulating real operations under different conditions.
