Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGEN) is preparing to expand into wind energy as it pushes ahead with one of the world’s largest renewable energy developments, signaling a broader strategy to strengthen its position in the country’s growing clean energy sector.
The power generation arm of Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said it is exploring investments in both onshore and offshore wind projects, complementing its existing portfolio of solar and battery energy storage assets.
Speaking on the sidelines of an energy forum organized by the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines, MGEN Renewables president and chief executive officer Dennis Jordan said the company sees wind energy as a natural next step in its renewable energy expansion.
“We don’t have something complete yet, but I think it will be wrong for us to totally not look into onshore wind at least,” Jordan said.
He added that the company is also assessing opportunities in offshore wind, although such projects typically require larger investments and more complex development requirements than solar and onshore wind facilities.
Beyond Solar
MGEN’s interest in wind energy comes as the company ramps up investments in renewable power generation nationwide.
Jordan said the firm does not intend to limit itself to solar power and battery storage systems, noting that it continues to evaluate new technologies and opportunities in the clean energy space.
The company’s renewable energy portfolio currently stands at about 408 megawatts (MW). However, MGEN expects this capacity to expand significantly, potentially reaching around 3,400 MW over the next two years as more projects come online.
MGEN also plans to continue participating in the government’s Green Energy Auction Program, which seeks to accelerate the development of renewable energy facilities and increase the share of clean power in the country’s energy mix.
The company had earlier signaled its interest in wind development through a partnership signed in September last year with Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO). The agreement covers the potential development of wind and energy storage projects in the Philippines.
MGEN and KEPCO are already partners in the 63.3-MW Calatagan Solar Farm in Batangas.
MTerra Solar Remains Top Priority
Despite its growing interest in wind energy, MGEN said its immediate focus remains the delivery of the ₱200-billion MTerra Solar project spanning Nueva Ecija and Bulacan.
The project is designed to feature a 3,500-MW solar facility paired with a 4,500-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system. Once completed, MTerra Solar is expected to become the world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage project.
The company has committed to fully energizing the facility by 2027, a milestone that is expected to play a key role in MGEN’s broader renewable energy strategy.
Jordan also reiterated plans to consolidate renewable energy assets through the planned merger of MGEN Renewables and SP New Energy Corp. (SPNEC) later this year.
Under the transaction, the combined entity is expected to operate under the name MGEN Renewable Energy Holdings Inc. (MGENR), creating a larger platform for future renewable energy investments.
Company officials have said the merger would pave the way for a re-initial public offering, potentially as early as 2027, with proceeds expected to help finance expansion projects.
Community And Energy Growth
MGEN is also expanding programs aimed at supporting communities that host its energy facilities.
The company recently opened a Meralco Power Academy facility in the Visayas to provide access to technical training and industry best practices. Through its MGEN Center for Innovation, the company is also pursuing energy education, research, and innovation initiatives in areas where it operates.
In communities surrounding the MTerra Solar project, MGEN has partnered with local government units and the Meralco Power Academy to provide livelihood and skills training programs. Participants who complete the courses can earn national certifications from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
According to MGEN, around 60 percent of its 600 scholars have been hired by contractors working on the MTerra Solar project, underscoring the company’s effort to link renewable energy investments with local employment and community development.
