Bayanihan Increases Energy Savings by Over 100% at 2024 Earth Hour

Bayanihan Increases Energy Savings by Over 100% at 2024 Earth Hour

  • June 16, 2024

The Filipino solidarity for energy conservation has resulted in the impressive accomplishment of 132.11 megawatts (MW) in electricity savings during the 2024 Earth Hour. This is a 110.73% increase from the 62.69 MW savings last year. As Filipinos joined together to shut off their electricity, communities expressed their commitment in mitigating climate change and advocating for sustainable energy use.

73.86 MW were saved from Luzon, 53.30 MW from Visayas, and 4.95 MW from Mindanao, compared to last year’s 33.29 MW from Luzon, 20.50 MW from Visayas, and 8.90 MW from Mindanao.

This highlights the power of the Philippines’ bayanihan culture in a collective effort to transition to green energy together. Through this consciousness, even small individual actions such as unplugging appliances and turning off the lights for one hour add up to a largely measured impact on reducing our carbon footprint and preserving energy resources.

“We are pleased to see such an impact in electricity savings during last Saturday’s Earth Hour. This only demonstrates our people’s dedication to safeguarding our planet. By coming together for this symbolic gesture, we send a powerful message of unity and commitment to sustainable practices,” Secretary Raphael PM. Lotilla said.

“But I hope our practice of energy conservation will go beyond the Earth Hour. As we enter the warm and dry season coupled with the El Niño phenomenon, let us sustain the momentum in order to prevent supply strain due to shifts in peak demand consumption brought about by increased cooling needs”, she adds.

The Department of Energy consistently implements the Earth Hour organized by the World Wide Fund Fund for Nature to encourage all Filipinos to make a difference in their own little way, inspiring their fellow citizens until the corporate and public establishment level. Turning off the lights is a small but powerful gesture in declaring our commitment to a greener future for a world that will continue to survive.
