The Importance of Energy Storage Solutions

The Importance of Energy Storage Solutions

  • August 20, 2024

In a country abundant with renewable energy, why is it so hard to make it mainstream?

The challenge lies in the intermittence of our renewable energy sources- we can only harvest the sun when it shines, the wind when it blows, and the water when it flows. Therefore, having energy storage solutions is essential for our country’s big transition to green energy.

It paves the road to independence.

The Philippines is heavily reliant on imported oil for majority of its energy share, and having a constant supply of renewable energy sources through storage can make the Philippines less vulnerable to fluctuating market prices.

It provides a backup plan for power outages.

Being highly vulnerable to power supply shortage due to natural crises and the rapidly accelerating economy, it is more important that ever to ensure that business operations may continue amid yellow and red alerts.

It promotes decentralization.

Remote and indigenous communities would benefit greatly from democratizing the storage and availability of power sources. Having energy storage allows power to be transported to areas with power deficiencies, allowing the community to take an active role in allocating energy reserves to priority sites and groups, such as schools and hospitals.

Creating policies that support it creates a framework for the sustainable energy transition

Energy storage is currently difficult due to the high cost of projects and equipment, as well as policies that pose as obstacles to investment and permits for execution. Focusing on altering policies to fit our agenda of becoming a green-powered country will not only open doors for efficient energy storage, but also forward our energy transition target.

It drives innovation and achievements for more talented Filipino scientists and entrepreneurs.

Energy storage is a pressing problem in the country, and must be addressed. With the right programs, policies and incentives, innovators may rise to the occasion to provide clever new solutions to make energy storage readily available.

It can turn over old infrastructures.

One thing holding us back from transitioning to clean energy is that our infrastructures were designed for coal and oil. Introducing energy storage systems will mandate that our energy grids be modernized, rehashed, and less conducive to damaging fossil fuels.

Advancing the initiative to create and implement energy storage systems not only helps the Philippines’ power agenda – it also creates a ripple effect that will greatly benefit the environment, indigenous communities and biodiversity. Having a well-erected energy storage system will reduce the need for harmful power plants, drive the need to educate communities about energy storage, and influence stakeholders to invest in solutions to give more power to those who need it most
